歌の背景
英國의 法律家로 作詞家의 Frederick•Edward•Wetheri(1848～1929)는, 1910年에「Danny Boy」라고 하는 歌詞를 썼습니다. 이것에 붙일 適當한 멜로디가 없는 채로 두었는데, 2年 後인 1912年, 美國에 살고 있던 義妹가「Londonderry air」의 樂譜를 보내 왔습니다.
그것을 본 Wetheri 는 「Danny Boy」가 이 曲에 잘 맞는 것을 깨닫고, 元來의 歌詞를 若干 修正하여, 이 멜로디에 接木시켰습니다.
「Danny Boy」는 1913年에 New York에서 発行되어 곧 世界에 퍼졌습니다. Wetheri의 歌詞는, 사랑의 노래라고 생각이 됩니다만, 母子의 離別의 노래라는 說이 强한 것 같습니다.
2番의 最初의 行의「all the flowers are dying」를, 「all the world is dying」이나「all the roses are dying」라고 하는 variant(変形)도 있습니다. 「all the world is dying」라고, 出征 한 우리 아이를 생각하는 어머니의 생각이라고 하는 이미지가 强해집니다.
「Danny Boy」이 発行된 해는, 第一次世界大戦 勃発의 前年으로, 온 世上이 戰爭의 予感으로 무서워하고 있었을 때였습니다.
